National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)

This program is in moratorium, and is not currently accepting applications from new students (Programa en moratoria, no acepta admisiones).

In the United States, most registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit professional degree programs in architecture offered by institutions with U.S. regional accreditation, recognizes three types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture, and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may be granted an eight-year, three-year, or two-year term of accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established educational standards.

Doctor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degree programs may require a preprofessional undergraduate degree in architecture for admission. However, the preprofessional degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree.

The NAAB grants candidacy status to new programs that have developed viable plans for achieving initial accreditation. Candidacy status indicates that a program expects to achieve initial accreditation within six years of achieving candidacy, if its plan is properly implemented.

In order to meet the education requirement set forth by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, an applicant for an NCARB Certificate must hold a professional degree in architecture from a program accredited by the NAAB; the degree must have been awarded not more than two years prior to initial accreditation. However, meeting the education requirement for the NCARB Certificate may not be equivalent to meeting the education requirement for registration in a specific jurisdiction. Please contact NCARB for more information.

The Universidad Ana G. Méndez is granted a three-year term of initial accreditation of the following NAAB-accredited degree program:

M. Arch. (non pre-professional degree plus 114 Graduate Credits- Track I )
M. Arch. (pre-professional degree plus 66 Graduate Credits- Track II)

Initial Candidacy granted: 2016
Year of initial accreditation: 2019
Visit for continuation of accreditation: 2022

  • Current Term of Accreditation:

“At their April 2020 meeting, the directors of the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), reviewed the Visiting Team Report (VTR) for the Universidad Ana G. Méndez.

On behalf of the Board, it gives me great pleasure to inform you that the Master of Architecture degree program was granted a three-year term of initial accreditation. The term is effective January 1, 2019, and the program is scheduled for its first visit for continuation of accreditation in spring 2022.

Please be reminded that continuing accreditation is predicated on the following requirement:

a) Annual Statistical Reports. These reports capture statistical information on the institution and the program. The next statistical report is due on or before November 30, 2020.

b) Public dissemination of both the Architecture Program Report and VTR is a condition of accreditation. These documents must be made public electronically in their entirety. Please see Condition II.4.4 of the 2014 Conditions for Accreditation and Section 5 of the 2015 Procedures for Accreditation.

On Behalf of the NAAB and the visiting team, thank you for your support of accreditation in architectural education.”
